Alderman Maurice Devenney has called for action to upgrade the road surface in several places in Newbuildings.

He said past attempts at patching the carriageway at Duncastle Road near Rosslea and at the Woodvale Road entrance to Dunverne, in particular, had not been successful and a full replacement scheme was needed.

“I have in the past decade worked with Roads Service to have repairs carried out in the rural area and campaigned tirelessly to get new projects carried out. In the past I had good success getting repairs and refurbishments done, but of late there seems to be a problem with repairs not being carried out, due primarily to financial constraints,” he said.

“With these two areas there are specific concerns, which have become exacerbated. The poor repairs at Rosslea have led to health and safety issues with noise pollution late at night as lorries and other vehicles travel backwards and forwards over the blemishes in the road surface. This area is adjacent to housing that includes elderly as well as very young residents whose sleep is affected.

“Some of the blemishes in the carriageway are so bad that drivers are being forced to swerve out round them, often putting them on the wrong side of the road in the face of oncoming traffic. I would appeal to Roads Service to take immediate attention.”
