Alleged Syria fightermay use PCs in ‘Tech’

A Londonderry man accused of training with Jaysh al-Islam whilst the group was fighting Islamic State and Bashar al-Assad in Syria is now allowed to use computers when he goes to the ‘Tech.’

Eamon Bradley, aged 26, with a bail address in Coshquin, is charged with attending a weapons and explosives training camp in Syria between April and October last year.

He is further charged with possessing a grenade with intent to endanger life or damage property in Syria. Bradley was released on High Court bail in February this year on condition he did not use the internet.

The case centres on Bradley’s alleged attendance at a Jaysh-al-Islam (Army of Islam) camp. Just last week the same group declared war on Russian soldiers fighting in Syria. In Court last week District Judge Barney McElholm, agreed to vary Bradley’s internet prohibition after hearing the 26-year-old is now studying at the North West Regional College. Bradley is now allowed to use the internet in his classroom, on a computer owned by NWRC, to access information relevant to his course. He will appear in court again tomorrow.

Defending Bradley last year Joe Brolly said: “His passionate case is this was a matter of conscience for him to protect people from atrocities. There’s no evidence he ever used a weapon.”

“Anything he was involved in cannot constitute terrorism, it was acting entirely in accordance with the public expressed position of the western coalition in tandem with Saudi Arabia and four other Middle Eastern governments,” he said.
