Almost half of Londonderry households out of work

ALMOST half of Londonderry is out of work; 16,400 (44 per cent) of households in the Foyle parliamentary constituency - the highest rate in Northern Ireland - are entirely jobless.

Social Development Minister Alex Attwood revealed the statistic in response to an Assembly Question.

The amount of Londonderry households with no one in work is almost double that in North Down, Lagan Valley and Newry and Mourne (27 per cent), according to Executive records.

Broken down at local authority level Derry City Council has the second highest percentage of households where no-one is in work with Larne and Moyle registering just above that at 45 per cent.

Mr Attwood advised the figures related to the average annual number of households with no-one in work during the period 2006/09.

The results were produced using the Family Resources Survey datasets for Northern Ireland, and the Households Below Average Income datasets for Northern Ireland.
