Alun Evans case adjourned

The Portstewart man who is charged with murdering his mother, a well known Portstewart hairdresser, at their home last June, has appeared before North Antrim Magistrates’ Court via video link.

Alun Kinney Evans (32) of Knockancor Drive appeared before District Judge Liam McNally on Monday morning.

Evans, also faces a second charge of being in possession of a class ‘B’ drug with intent to supply.

Margaret Evans, 69, also known as Margo, was found beaten at her home in the seaside town on June 4 last year

During the short hearing, court heard that files, amounting to three boxes, were being sent to senior counsel.

Evans, wearing a grey coat and red jumper, had previously been an inpatient at Knockbracken Hospital in Belfast, however he was moved to Magheraberry Prison in December when the Mental Health Order detaining him expired.

During Monday’s short hearing, Evans spoke only once to confirm his name.

A spokesperson for the PPS told the court that she expected a ‘significant update’ on the case on the next occasion.

District Judge McNally adjourned the case for four weeks, until March 23.
