Alzheimer’s Carer Information and Support Programme

The programme will look at key issues facing people with dementia and their carers, and will explore how to tackle them.

This is a structured programme consisting of four two-and-a-half hour sessions, from 1.00pm-3.30pm, and each programme can accommodate up to 12 people. As each session is linked it is recommended that you attend all four.

Session 1 - Understanding dementia explores the physical, psychological and emotional implications that dementia may have on the person with dementia.

Session 2 - Legal and Money Matters explores legal and financial issues to help carers understand about the importance of planning for the future, mental capacity etc

Session 3 - Providing Support and care explores concerns/challenges that arise when supporting a person with dementia, communication with and understanding the person with dementia.

Session 4 – Coping day to day & next steps – explores the physical, psychological & emotional implications that dementia may have on the carer, including their relationships, how to look after themselves and identification of relevant support and services.

There is estimated to be 19000 people in Northern Ireland with dementia. The term ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms which include loss of memory, mood changes, and problems with communication and reasoning.

Each person is unique and will experience dementia in their own way, and with the support and understanding of those around them.
