Alzheimer’s carers information and education programme

THE Alzheimer’s Society has announced a carers information and education programme for carers of people living with Dementia which will be lead by various professionals in the field of dementia care.

The programme will run at West Bann Development Centre, Killowen Street, Coleraine, for four weeks beginning on Wednesday, March 8 at 7.30pm. Each session will last one-and-a-half hours.

The details of the session are as follows: Week 1: What is dementia - NHSCT; Week 2: Your entitlement to benefits - Carers Northern Ireland; Week 3: Behaviours that challenge - Jeremy Murray CPN NHSCT; Week 4 Your local chemist - Clear Pharmacy.

Adrian Friel Dementia Support Manager for the Causeway Service says that these information evening have played a vital role in caring for a loved one with a dementia they provide useful information and support for the carer in the mist of a very frightening illness.

They are also useful sessions for people who want to find out more about the illness and what might be available in the local community.

For too long dementia has been a hidden illness and it is only through carers and their loved ones coming together as a group and being actively involved in their local branch that they have a voice.
