Alzheimer’s Society asks Foyle residents to help beat dementia

The Alzheimer’s Society is urging Foyle residents to put on their walking shoes and support Memory Walk. Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. The 2012 Foyle Memory Walk will take place on Sunday 2nd September in St Columb’s Park.

The Society is asking families and individuals to step out for a few hours and raise money to help support local people with dementia and their carers.

‘Alzheimer’s Society helps families and friends enjoy their time together so that they can share their happy memories for as long as possible. That’s why I am encouraging you to take part in Memory Walk 2012 and help raise money to support local people with dementia.’

There are 17,000 people with dementia in Northern Ireland. The money raised from Memory Walk will help to support them and their carers.

This year’s Foyle Memory Walk takes place in St Columb’s Park, Browning Drive entrance starting at 14:00 and is open to people of all ages, children to grandparents. Registration begins at 13:00.

‘Memory Walk is a fantastic way to spend a Sunday. From a four year old to his 80 year old gran and her dog, memory walk sees whole families coming together to fight dementia.

Additionally an array of entertainment and refreshments will be available making it a day to remember for everyone who takes part.

Thanks to the support of Bupa Care Homes, Memory Walk is able to support more people living with dementia in Foyle through the vital funds that are raised.’

Paula Mullen mother of 2 children from Foyle, who took part in last year’s Memory walk, said:

‘We had a fabulous day last year, making it a family day out with a picnic to follow. We were walking for my mum who has dementia. I got myself sponsored by friends and raised vital funds to help support the work of Alzheimer’s Society Foyle . I’d encourage everyone to sign up today.’
