Ambulance damaged in Coleraine incident

The shattered windscreen of an ambulance which was attacked by youths at Mount Street in Coleraine on Tuesday night while attending an assault victim and a second man who was stabed at the scene.PICTURE MARK JAMIESON.

Two men were arrested during the incident at 8.20pm.

Chief Inspector Nicky Thompson said: “Police responded to a report of damage caused to an ambulance and around ten people having gathered around the vehicle.

“The situation quickly de-escalated when police arrived.

“We established that we were also dealing with a stabbing incident when a man who was at the scene presented himself with wounds to his back.

“He was taken to hospital for treatment, but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening

“Officers arrested two people in relation to the stabbing incident and the damage caused to the ambulance.

“An 18-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

A second male, aged 17, was arrested for common assault and criminal damage.

The investigations into both matters are continuing.”

DUP councillor Tracy Craig has spoken out about the incident: “I find it disgusting that people in their work have been treated in this manner. It is incidents like this that drain resources from those in need. The ambulance service is precious.”
