The suspected ammunition was taken away for forensic examination and the road was reopened later in the day.

Following the security alert, Lisburn Councillor Alexander Redpath thanked the public for their patience and consideration whilst diversions were in place on the Moira Road.

“I would like to thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding during the security alert,” said Mr Redpath.

“The PSNI are carrying out a very difficult job in exceptionally difficult circumstances.

There was second security alert in Lisburn on Friday (August 8) in Coolsara Park.
