‘An attack on the community’

THE attacks on St Michael’s Grammar School are an attack on the community, a Craigavon Councillor has said.

Sinn Fein’s Johnny McGibbon hit out at those responsible and appealed to parents to make sure they know where their children were at night.

“Attacks on our schools are not victimless crimes,” he said.

“The victims are our communities, our children and the generations to come.

“Vandalism is a crime and one that when it involves a school, steals money meant for the education of our children and young adults.

“The more that has to be spent on repairing the damage caused by vandals and in securing school premises against them, the less there is for the actual education programmes.”

Cllr McGibbon added: “Our schools belong to all of us. They were built with the public’s money and the public’s money maintains them.

“When someone damages school property they are in reality stealing and wasting your money.

“In the interests of our children’s future I would ask those who live in proximity to the school to keep an eye on it and immediately report any intruders in the school grounds or suspicious actions around the school perimeter.”
