An Average of Four Drug Searches Every Day - in Ballymena

LOCAL police have continued efforts to tackle Ballymena's drug problem by increasing the number of drug searches carried out.

Figures released as part of the District Policing Partnership 12 Month report, show that the amount of searches for controlled drugs carried out increased 44.2% from 896 in 08/09 to 1292 in 09/10. This amount also meant that police met their annual target.

Seaking at last Thursday night's DPP meeting Area Commander Ryan Henderson said: "I am delighted at the efforts my team in Ballymena have once again put into disrupting drug dealing in our borough over the past year.

"On average we have conducted four searches every day of the year, a tremendous effort in response to public concerns.

"This has led to some significant seizures of drugs of all classifications."

In the last three months police seized 65k of Cannabis plants in Dunclug and 50k of Ecstasy, they also seized 70k herbal Cannabis from the Moorfields Road Area.

Area Commander Henderson added: "My hope is that our enforcement and disruption efforts give the communities some peace from the effects of drug dealing and allow the many support services within our town the space to deliver the much needed addiction treatment and family support."
