Londonderry Magistrates Court heard that McDaid went into Superdrug in Limavady and stole self-tanning products worth over £60.

He was banned from going into the shop as part of an anti-social behaviour order.

Police identified McDaid on CCTV and he was arrested three days later.

During police interview, officers noticed a strong smell of cannabis.

However, nothing was found in a search of the defendant.

McDaid used the bathroom on numerous occasions during the interview and was seen putting his hands into his trousers.

A bag of cannabis, worth £100, was then found underneath a table in the interview room.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said his client has very ‘strained financial circumstances’ and is addicted to cannabis.

He told the court McDaid has over 100 previous convictions, most of which involve a ‘fairly pathetic series of offences indicative of the difficulties this young man has’.

He said it was ‘daft.’

Mr Devlin told the Court that is is ‘not entirely clear’ why McDaid stole the tanning products but it is ‘depressing someone so young finds themselves in custody for something so daft’.
