Anger at '˜cowardly' attack on Teebane memorial wreaths laid by victims' families

The destruction of wreaths left at a Cookstown memorial by family and friends of eight workmen shot dead by the IRA, has been condemned locally as a '˜disgusting' act.

Police appealed for information after wreaths at the Burn Road’s Teebane memorial monument were destroyed and thrown across the road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Local UUP councillor Trevor Wilson has condemned the attack as “an act of wanton vandalism”.

“This is not the first time this memorial has been attacked and I appeal to anyone who has any information to inform the police immediately,” he said.

DUP Mid Ulster MLA, Ian McCrea has also hit out at those responsible for damaging the floral wreaths left by family and friends at the Teebane Memorial.

Speaking today, Mr McCrea said: “I completely condemn the cowards responsible for this attack which serves no purpose whatsoever.

“We recently stood together to remember the men who were murdered by the IRA and watch family and friends lay wreaths in remembrance of their loved ones.

“To hear that those floral tributes have been damaged under the cover of darkness is nothing other than disgusting.”

Ulster Unionist Assembly Member for Mid Ulster, Sandra Overend, has called the attack “disgraceful”.

“It is utterly shameful that someone has taken it upon themselves to take the flowers and wreaths – laid in memory of the eight workmen who were killed in 1992 by the IRA – and scatter them across the road in the early hours of Sunday morning,” she said.

“My thoughts are obviously with the families of those who were murdered by the IRA at Teebane, as they are left to cope with this unnecessary distress. If anyone has any information about this vandalism, please contact the PSNI on 101.”

Mid Ulster DUP councillor Wilbert Buchanan, added: “This is a terrible act of desecration and my thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who had loved ones murdered or injured at Teebane.”
