Angling ambition at Roughan Lough

The newly formed Roughan Angling Club has acquired the rights of the 50 acre Roughan Lough on a ten year lease, and intends to stock the lake with rainbow trout.

A spokesperson for the club said it intends to make the lough a training lake for the national fishing team as well as for angling coaches. It also will erect new fishing stands, including specially designed disabled ones.

Information on how to apply for day and season tickets will be released by club members in the near future,

The lake was stocked by the Fishery Board up until about thirty years ago, when the authority reverted to the landowners adjoining the lake. It is reputed to be full of very large pike.

The lake has picturesque walks around the Crannog and Castle in an area of great historical interest, however, the area has been plagued by vandalism, with the latest incident occurring over the weekend.

Police are investigating the destruction of new signs erected by the Roughan Angling Club.

A member of the angling club said that police will also enforce fishing regulations at the lake.
