Anti-social lorry drivers grind Larne residents' gears

Some anti-social lorry drivers were causing problems for a number of Larne residents in February 1990.

People in the Old Ballymena Road area of the town were to be contacted by the council to ascertain their views over making the road a cul-de-sac.

There was an ongoing problem of lorry drivers parking up for the night along the road.

Larne Council wrote to the Department of the Environment following complaints that the drivers were urinating in public and giving verbal abuse when checked by residents.

The DOE informed the council that the drivers weren’t breaking any regulations by parking on the Old Ballymena Road and the issue should be referred to the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

A suggestion was made to turn the road into a cul-de-sac to discourage the lorries from being parked there.

The proposal was made by Cllr Roy Beggs. He said that if the residents would agree to the cul-de-sac idea it could solve the problem.

The recommendation that residents be approached was seconded by Cllr Winston Fulton and was to go to the next full council meeting for approval.
