Antrim and Newtownabbey Council voices support for Somme Association at ‘challenging time’

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough councillors have reiterated support for the Somme Association ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Speaking at a meeting of the council’s Policy and Governance Committee on Tuesday evening, Airport Ulster Unionist Alderman Paul Michael BEM acknowledged “difficult and challenging times for all charities” at present as a result of the Covid pandemic.

Ald Michael said: “I think it is only appropriate and right in the week of remembrance that we remember to take special note of the challenges to services and charities.

“I would ask members to reflect on that and support these charities as best we can.”

Party colleague Macedon Cllr Robert Foster said: “The Somme Association is facing a pretty challenging time given that museums are closed.

“It is important we have these places going forward so children can learn about our history.”

In recent correspondence to the local authority, the Somme Association thanked council for its continued support through its annual membership.
