Apology over Sullatober flood scheme delay

THE Rivers Agency has apologised to Carrick residents over the delay in completing flood alleviation works on the Sullatober Water, claiming that the scheme has been ‘hampered by unfavourable weather conditions.’

The apology comes after East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs asked for an explanation as to why a number of public rights of way in the Shaftsbury Park area have been closed for almost a year, rather than the 16 weeks that was originally indicated.

“As a local representative I have been aware of the need to upgrade waterways and improve flood management to reduce the risk of flooding in Carrickfergus town centre and other locations within the town. I was therefore very pleased when the Rivers Agency upgraded the Sullatober Water in their Phase 1 development and have been supportive of their further improvements on their Phase 2, which commenced from the 5th September 2011 and was expected to last some 16 weeks.

“It is rather surprising that almost a year later the pathways and the Shaftsbury underpass remain closed. I have contacted the Rivers Agency seeking an explanation as to why their project is taking so long, when the flood protection will be in place and finally when the public can expect these local pathways to reopen,” Mr Beggs commented.

Responding to the Ulster Unionist representative’s queries, a spokesperson for the Department for Agriculture and Rural Development said: “The works being undertaken relate to the second and final phase of a flood alleviation scheme on the Sullatober Water in Shaftsbury Park.

“Progress on the scheme has been hampered by unfavourable weather conditions, resulting in unsuitable ground conditions for carrying out earthworks and related activities.

“The railway underpass is scheduled to reopen in the next fortnight and full access through the park will be available as soon as possible. Rivers Agency would like to apologise for the delay in completing the works, and for any disruption which may have been caused as a result.”
