UUP party member Trevor Wilson has also condemned the theft.

He told the Mail: “I do not condone this behaviour as things like this only help to increase tensions within the area.

“It’s not only a hate crime but also a theft when people enter other people’s property to steal things.

“I appeal for calm in the area [and] anyone who has any information to come forward to police.”

The incident, which was reported to police on Monday, July 6, is being treated as both a theft and a hate crime by the force.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Police are investigating the theft of a number of Union flags from the Stewart Avenue and Cooke Crescent area of Cookstown overnight last night, Sunday 5 July.

“Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the theft or anyone with any information to contact officers at Cookstown on the number 101... or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
