Mayor Kennedy said: “What happened to Sarah Hanna and her young family that morning is distressing and has pulled at the heartstrings of the community. People here have a reputation for good neighbourliness and there is a lot of sympathy and concern.

“We are always sending money to help other countries so it is great that we are pulling together to help someone local.

“Since we launched the appeal we have been inundated with donations. The volunteer team as well as manning the big box at the Diamond went round all the shops last week and got an excellent response from businesses and also customers who were coming forward wanting to give. We also had a large collection at the Switch On which was well supported and are getting cheques sent into the Mayors office – quite a few came this morning (Monday).

“Finally we were also having people call at Riada House and Town Hall so we have now put collection boxes at reception at these two locations.”
