Appeal to find Cookstown war hero's family

In a letter to the Times, Andy Glenfield who runs a website dedicated to the war service of people from Northern Ireland, says he discovered the headstones during a recent visit to Germany.

“I recently visited Berlin and Hamburg in Germany and whilst there I visited the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemeteries where Allied Servicemen have been buried.

“Prior to visiting I had researched the names of men from Northern Ireland and have photographed the headstone of Sergeant Frederick Livingston Roleston who was a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner on a Short Stirling Aircraft of 218 Squadron, Royal Air Force.

“His Stirling Bomber HA-Q, number N3762 flew from R.A.F. Downham Market with eight other aircraft on a Raid to Bomb a Submarine Yard at Herrenwyk, Lubeck.

“Sergeant Roleston was the Son of Frederick Thomas and Sarah Louisa Roleston from Benburb and is buried in Hamburg.

“Lance Corporal George Sterritt was serving with the Pioneer Corps. He was the son of James and Catherine Sterritt from Cookstown, County Tyrone and the Husband of Annie Sterritt. Lance Corporal Sterritt is buried in Berlin and I think it is worthy of note that he was 50 Years Old when he died.
