Applicants sought for Wider Horizons 2011

ST COLUMB’S Park House has been awarded a Wider Horizons Programme funded by the IFI in conjunction with the Department of Employment and Learning and FAS - the training agency in the South of Ireland.

The programme will run for four months from early July, and includes a two-month module in Canada. St Columb’s Park House are now looking for suitable applications from young people aged 18 to 25. Seven young people will be chosen, divided equally between both communities in Northern Ireland and from Co Donegal.

“It will include training suitable to participants’ needs and work experience while in Canada participants will be placed in high-quality work experience placements,” said mentor George Glenn.

“The benefits of the Wider Horiszons Programme cannot be overestimated, as around 40 per cent of participants move into full time employment, while another 40 per cent have been motivated to take up further education opportunities. There is also the reconciliation aspect of the programme,” he said.

Director of St Columb’s park House, Brian Dougherty, said: “Our experience from last year has shown what a wonderful opportunity this programme is to develop the capacity, confidence and skills levels of the participants and of course for the young participants to experience living and working in a world class city.

“Given the unfortunate economic climate in which we currently live we expect interest in the programme to be high.

“We are of course keen that we broaden the net to as many parts of the city and Donegal as possible so urge young people to contact us for further information and guidance with the application process, if necessary.”
