The unit, which will be located just outside the Minorca Place store, will provide a range of services including watch and shoe repair, key cutting and dry cleaning.

Last year, a number of local representatives and traders expressed concern that the facility could draw footfall away from the town centre, where similar services are being provided by independent traders.

Speaking at the December meeting of Carrick Council, Alderman Jim Brown said: “These facilities are already available in the borough and my fear is that this will put local people out of work.”

However, the Planning Service indicated the proposed site fell within the town centre area.
