The Mayor continued: "When Council signalled its intention to create the memorial, the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club, Northern Counties Section, weighed in behind Council's plans, indicating their intention of raising funds to contribute towards a sculpture, in recognition of Robert's relationship with the Club and his support for our "Roon Tha Toon" event.

"I commend them on the tremendous effort they have made in promoting fundraising to date and to those who have made donations to the fund. We look forward to installing the sculpture in the memorial Garden in due course. For its part Council have provided for the sculpture a granite base cut to the shape of the North West Circuit, which will be a central feature of the garden."
