£3,000 cheque forBrainwaves charity

The event was organised by Lea Vaughan, owner of Forest Fitness.

Twenty-five hardy souls braved the icy waters for the charity swim as 100 spectators lined Marine Highway to watch.

Lea said: “The New Year’s Day dip was a success and we raised £3165 for Brainwaves NI. A big thank you to all involved.”

In particular, he thanked Domino’s, Carrickfergus, Flippin crepes, Brewer’s Fayre, Weatherspoon’s Carrick and everyone from Carrickfergus Leisure Centre who took part.

Lea also extended thanks to members of Carrickfergus Sea Cadets for their support.

The festive fundraiser also involved a “Real Santa” experience with a “sleigh ride” for children around the town.

Lea said that he decided to organise the event in aid of Brainwaves to support a friend.

Brainwaves NI is dedicated to providing support and information to all those affected by a brain tumour: patients, families and carers.

The charity is made up of members affected by a brain tumour and “understands the feelings of isolation, fear and confusion that being diagnosed, or living with a brain tumour can bring”.

It also “understands the physical and emotional challenges and the need for support, as well as appropriate and accurate quality information and advice”.

In March, Lea will hold a five kilometre forest “mud run” to raise awareness and funds for Dementia NI.

Dementia NI aims to support people living with dementia and provide training, education and awareness for individuals and organisations. The Northern Trust Empowerment Group is specifically for individuals with dementia living within the Northern Trust area.
