Arcadia walkway WILL be completed by end of month state Coleraine Council

COLERAINE Council has pledged that the walkway at Portrush East’s Strand - which has been damaged since December last year - WILL be repaired by the end of this month.

Business people and members of the public have been critical that the walkway between the Arcadia and the East Strand car park - which was only completed in July last year - has been out of bounds to the public since the damage was caused in December.

The fact that such a new project could so easily be damaged by the sea was one strand of their argument as well as the potential loss of earnings caused to local businesses who rely on passing members of the public.

There were also fears that the Olympic Torch relay route would have to be changed because the damaged walkway still hadn’t been repaired - five months later - however Coleraine Council dismissed this idea.

A spokeswoman for Coleraine Borough Council said: “ Construction repairs are on-going and on track to be complete by end of May 2012.

“The Olympic Torch relay route will not be altered because of the damage.”
