Archaeology Day at Tower Museum gives insight into World War I

VISITORS to the city's Tower Museum this Saturday will be afforded the opportunity to get a real insight into events during the First World War when the Museum hosts 'Archaeology Day.'

From 1pm until 4pm visitors to the Museum will get a chance to find out more about the 'Great War,' as told through items recovered from a number of archaeological digs.

Staff from the Somme Association and the Somme Centre in Newtownards will be on hand to talk about materials unearthed in excavations at Thiepval Wood in France.

Thiepval was the starting point for the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and objects on display will include uniforms, personal items and military artefacts.

Members of the public are also encouraged to bring along their own First World War memorabilia which the experts should be able to shed a little light on.

This is part of Connection and Division, a new project involving Derry City Council's Museum Service, Fermanagh County Museum and the Inniskillings Museum exploring the history of the Western Border region from the period 1910 to 1930.

Head of Museum and Heritage Services with Derry City Council, Craig McGuicken explained that Saturday's event should give those attending a whole new perspective on the 1914-1918 conflict.

"The First World War retains a fascination for people. It was a global conflict but is also of local interest as thousands of people from both sides of the community here took part in it.

"Archaeology Day at the Tower Museum will give people a real insight into events that took place during the war."
