Archers take aim for Olympic project

A LOCAL archery group was involved in an Olympic task recently as they temed up with a Northern Ireland Arts Group aiming to capture the sound of the sport.

The Ballyvally Archery Club, led by Frank Mulligan, opened their outdoor course in Loughbrickland to a team from the Verbal Arts Centre in Derry recently to help with a project in honour of the 2012 London Olympics.

A writer and a composer who chose archery as their theme for the innovative project visited the Ballyvally team to capture the sounds of the sport for Comment-8, a project for Legacy Trust UK.

The music, comprising the sounds of arrows twanging and hitting the target, and a special piece of prose will be performed at the Belmont on April 11 .

Project Co-Ordinator Claire McDermott said the project is one of many taking place across the UK. “Comment-8 is one of six projects that together make up ‘Connections’, Northern Ireland’s regional project for Legacy Trust UK,” said Claire.

“Legacy Trust UK supports a wide range of innovative cultural and sporting activities that celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and will leave a lasting legacy in communities throughout the United Kingdom.”

Mr Mulligan said the group is honoured to be associated with the project.

“The artists involved selected archery as their Olympic sport and, when seeking to record the sound of arrows hitting their target, had been advised to come to Ballyvally,” he said.

“We are all really looking forward to the final performance of the composition at the Belmont, it should be a great night.”

Everyone is welcome to the Iveagh Suite of the Belmont on Monday April 11. Admission is free but those planning to attend are asked to ring the Verbal Arts Centre on (028) 7126 6946 to book a place.
