Ardboe woman helps raise a staggering £24K for kids with cancer

In June, Paula Daly took part in the Tanzanian Tribal Trek for Cancer Fund for Children, a charity that provides vital practical and financial support services, and therapeutic short breaks to local children affected by cancer, and their families.

Paula, joined a group 15 other intrepid souls for the trek, including fellow employees from Henderson Wholesale where she currently works, travelling to Tanzania to explore volcanic craters, wild African plains and vast rugged mountains.

The Tribal Trek took the participants on an adventure through the Ngoro Ngoro National Park, the Empakaai volcano crater, and through Maasai villages.

A typical trekking day included up to seven hours of walking, often at high altitudes or over difficult terrain.

According to Paula, the trekking experience was out of this world. “It was truly amazing to meet so many different people who lived in villages seemingly cut off from the rest of the world, isolated in the Tanzanian wilderness. We witnessed some incredible sights from the impressive mount Kili to the Ngorogoro crater, and spotted lots of wildlife along the way!”

Paula successfully completed the trek and raised an incredible £24,000 with the rest of the Henderson staff to support local children affected by cancer.

She also came away with some wonderful memories. “Towards the end of the trip, about 40 kids from the Enayobi village followed us to our next camp, a two hour walk away.

“They chatted to us along the way, holding our hands and teaching us their songs – for me, this was one of the highlights of my trip.”

“There was an incredible amount of teamwork needed to make the trek the best experience possible for everyone. I enjoyed how everyone worked together to start and finish our days together. In a big group, you get the chance to meet and chat to lots of different people, so there was never a dull moment.”

Cancer Fund for Children is currently on the lookout for people to join its Rockies Trek in June 2016. This fantastic eight day trekking challenge will take participants to the heart of one of the most beautiful sections of the Rocky Mountains, with iconic views and stunning backdrops at every turn.
