Arlene's up for the marathon challenge - once again!

BALLYMONEY lady Arlene Pettinger is rising to the marathon challenge once again, by taking on number 10!

Local shop assistant Arlene will be taking her place at the start line of the Belfast City Marathon on Monday, May 3 and is hoping to raise yet more money for Macmillan cancer support in this her 10th marathon.

Since taking up her first marathon challenge in 2002 Arlene has raised over 40,000. Which she attributes to the generosity of the people of Ballymoney along with the support of her employer David Smyth and her work colleagues.

Arlene first became aware of Macmillan Cancer Support when her daughter Lisa was diagnosed with a brain tumour, this meant long hospital stays in Belfast for surgery and treatments.

Macmillan helped the family financially with travelling costs to and from the hospital and later provided a nurse which meant Lisa could remain at home with her family during the last weeks of her life until sadly, she died at the age of just 12.

Arlene explained: "This years training hasn't quite gone to plan so ill adopt the words of a poster Lisa had on her wall while in hospital". When I go as far as I can God will take me the rest of the way!

"Employed at Glebeside Spar, my co workers and I, as part of the community, often hear of those around us and their families who are affected by cancer, and this gives me even further inspiration to keep lacing up my trainers and hitting the road" said Arlene "knowing that my fundraising efforts could be helping someone so close to home".
