Armed robbery at Carrickfergus shop

Detectives are appealing for information following a report of an armed robbery at commercial premises in the Woodburn Road area of Carrickfergus yesterday (August 16).

Detective Chief Inspector Carmichael said: “At approximately 5.45pm a male wearing a balaclava entered the premises armed with what is believed to be a handgun. He demanded money and cigarettes from the assistant in the shop. He also instructed a customer who was in the shop to go to the back of the premises.

“He made off on foot in the direction of Hawthorn Avenue, Carrickfergus with a sum of cash and a quantity of cigarettes. He is described as being approximately 6ft in height, slim to medium build.

“Neither the sales assistant or the customer were injured; however they were both left very badly shaken.

“Detectives would appeal to anyone who may have noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area or who has any information to contact detectives in Larne on the non-emergency number 101.
