Armed robbery condemned

DUP Alderman Maurice Devenney has condemned the armed robbery at Culmore on Monday.

Speaking yesterday, Tuesday, Mr Devenney said he wanted to condemn the incident and described it as an attack on people providing servicecs on the community.

“A Post Office is a place where essential services are offered, like elderly receiving their pensions or vulnerable groups getting their benefits and this was an act by people with no understanding of people’s needs and the effect their actions will have on the elderly and vulnerable in society,” said Mr Devenney.

“Unfortunately, these sorts of crimes are happening, and it is a worry that businesses offering vital services like this are being targeted. Two people work in this Post Office and it is wrong that that there are those who view people in this situation as an easy target.

“There are are lots of people in a tight financial situation at the moment because of the economy, but they don’t solve their problems by carrying out acts like this,” he said.

Mr Devenney also called on anyone with information to go to the police.

Meanwhile, the PSNI said Army technical officers had finished examining the vehicle believed to be involved in the armed robbery at business premises at the Culmore Road, Foyle area this morning (Monday, 9th July). Nothing untoward was found.
