Arrest after cars struck on Low Road

Councillor Jenny Palmer said traffic calming measures for the Grand Street/Low Road cannot come quickly enough after a number of cars were damaged on Wednesday night (April 13) after a motorist crashed into several parked vehicles.

Mrs Palmer said she was thankful no-one was seriously injured but said the incident showed there was a ‘real need for something’ to control traffic.

Last month, Transport NI confirmed a new traffic calming scheme on the Grand Street/Low Road could finally be on the cards as early as next year and they were currently preparing a preliminary design.

Transport NI described the area as one that “retains a high position on our prioritised list for the provision of further traffic calming measures”.

Transport NI stated that they hope to progress this scheme in the near future, possibly during the forthcoming financial year in 2016/17.

Mrs Palmer said the confirmation from Transport NI will be welcome news to the residents of the area who complained bitterly of the high volume of traffic on the Low Road over the years.

It is often used as a short cut to avoid traffic on Queensway and many residents complained of the number of challenges it presents for pedestrians and for children walking to school.

Police said they arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol and dangerous driving following the incident.

Police received a report at 11pm that a car had struck a number of parked cars in the street. Police attended and arrested the man who remains in custody at this time assisting officers with their enquiries. Police said there were no reports of any injuries.
