Arrest after knife-wielding robber targets restaurant

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to rob a restaurant in Spencer Road on Monday evening.

Police in Londonderry received a report a knife-wielding robbery had attempted to steal the till from the premises just before 9pm.

They were also provided with a description of the suspect.

Detective Constable Conor Gaile said: “Police received a report at around 8.50pm that a man had entered the restaurant armed with a knife and had attempted to take the contents of the till.

“He was unable to open the till but left the premises with other items including a handbag belonging to a staff member. No one was injured during the incident.”

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery shortly after the incident.

Detective Constable Gaile explained: “The man whose description had been passed to police was arrested a short time later in Gortfoyle Place and is currently in custody helping with enquiries.

“I would ask anyone who witnessed this incident to contact CID in Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101.”
