Arrest warrant for “lethal weapon” accused

A JUDGE has issued an arrest warrant for a man accused of possessing a “lethal weapon” after he failed to appear in court for a second time.

District Judge Barney McElholm issued the warrant for 18-year-old Emmet Noel Smith last week.

Smith, of Bradley Park, is accused of possessing the loaded crossbow in the Elaghmore Park area of the city on June 27.

An investigating told Londonderry Magistrates Court he believed he could connect Smith to the charge.

Defence solicitor Ciaran McGuinness revealed to the court the teenager has “left the jurisdiction because he is under paramilitary threat”.

The solicitor said he has been trying to contact his client but has been unable to take any instructions from him.

Mr McElholm issued the warrant stating the charge was “quite a serious matter” and a loaded crossbow is a “lethal weapon”.
