Arrests made after CCTV spots vandalism in Lisburn

LISBURN'S CCTV system was used to assist in the arrest of two youths after flower displays were vandalised at the weekend.

Last Friday night Lisburn's CCTV operators were monitoring the city centre cameras when they noticed two youths behaving suspiciously in Bridge Street. It emerged flower displays in the area were vandalised. On Saturday night a similar incident was recorded in the same location.

On both occasions the CCTV operator contacted the police and directed them to a location where two arrests were made.

Councillor James Tinsley, Chair of Lisburn Council's Environmental Services and a Board member of Lisburn Commerce Against Crime commented; "The CCTV cameras are worth their weight in gold when it comes to halting this kind of mindless behaviour that is so distressing to shop owners and members of the public. Environmental Services and private business owners invest time and effort into making the City look inviting for all and not for people to wreck on a night out."

Ernie Knox, Chairman of Lisburn Commerce Against Crime who operate the CCTV said: "The CCTV system in Lisburn is currently undergoing an upgrade, thanks to funding from Lisburn City Council. Anyone who underestimates the clarity of the CCTV cameras is in for a rude awakening if they believe they can commit crimes in the City and get away with it."

Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chair of the Council's Economic Development added: "Lisburn City Council have recently increased funding to LCAC for the replacement and upgrade of Lisburn's CCTV cameras. I am confident the CCTV system will continue to be a great tool to detect and deter crime and criminal behaviour within Lisburn City Centre."
