Arrests made over illegal taxis operating in Dungannon

Police in Dungannon have been actively targeting Illegal taxi’s in the Dungannon area over recent weeks.

A man was arrested in the early hours of August 30th in the Moy area for offences related to operating an illegal taxi including committing fraud by false representation. He was released on bail pending further enquiries.

A second man was arrested in the Moy area in the early hours of Sunday September 6th. He is suspected of operating as an illegal taxi and faces a number of charges. He was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Constable Foster of Dungannon Police said: “It is very clear that there are number of illegal taxis are operating in Dungannon. Illegal taxis present a risk to anyone who uses them in some instances, they are uninsured and the safety checks that are carried out on drivers are not completed.

“Top tips to protect yourself is to use reputable firms only, check the driver is displaying his photo ID and that the vehicle is displaying current taxi licence plates.

“Illegal taxi activity is detrimental to the taxi industry and its image. Police and partner agencies will continue to apply measures to make sure every taxi on our roads is safe, driven by an insured, licensed driver and operated through a reputable taxi business.

“Taxi firms should ensure their drivers continue to display proper plates and carry the necessary papers and identification so that a member of the public can easily identify a legal taxi.

“Anyone with information on the activities of illegal taxis should contact police on the 101 number alternatively information about crime can be passed anonymously via the ‘Crimestoppers charity’ on 0800 555 111.”
