Arson attack at old Tesco site

POLICE are appealing for information following what is believed to be a deliberate fire at the old Tesco building on Castle Lane.

A total of five fire engines were required to tackle the blaze, including one aerial appliance, on Sunday evening.

The emergency services received the call at around 7pm.

Station commander Martin McStay was present at the scene and condemned those responsible.

He said: “Initially we had two fire appliances at the scene. The blaze was so big we had to bring another two appliances out along with an ariel appliance. We had three teams with breathing apparatus in the premises to make sure there was nobody was trapped inside.

“I would encourage parents to be vigilant and know what their kids are up to. Young people would also need to take care before something terrible happens.”

The building has been vacant for a number of years and it’s understood that it has been used by teenagers as a place for drinking in the past.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious at this stage and would appeal to anyone with information to contact them at Lurgan police station on 0845 600 8000.
