ARSONISTS PUTTING LIVES IN DANGER

ARSONISTS starting gorse fires have been warned that they are putting their lives and those of others in serious danger.

The warning comes after local firefighters tackled 39 gorse fires in the Glengormley District area, including incidents on Carnmoney Hill and in the Hightown area, over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Fire crews have been stretched to almost breaking point with hundreds of similar fires right across the province. Fortunately, those in the Newtownabbey area have been relatively minor in comparison to others across the country.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dale Ashford said: “We have experienced an unprecedented level of operational activity over a four-day period between April 29 and May 2, with firefighters tackling 755 gorse and wildland fires right across Northern Ireland, working in arduous conditions for prolonged periods of time striving to protect life, property and the environment.

“Sunday, May 1, was the busiest day on record for NIFRS.”
