Arsonists who torched Youth Club are condemned

The blaze destroyed a mobile building at the youth club in the grounds of the former St Aloysius School and has deprived the youth club of a meeting place.

The fire happened around midnight on Saturday and it is being treated as malicious.

The mobile was one site used by The Glens Youth Centre which also operates at another site in Cushendun.

A North Eastern Education Board spokesman said the centres are operated by the Board’s Youth Service.

He added: “It appears to be malicious and this was an attack on the local community and it is depriving the young people of a facility.”

Sergeant David Armour of Moyle PSNI said they are treating the attack as malicious.

“This was a mean attack on premises used by young people but from our point of view we will be doing all we can to ensure the young people of Cushendall get a youth facility up and running again as soon as possible,” he added.

It was the second attack on the Cushendall youth club in recent weeks.

On March 19 the Youth Club was broken into and the interior extensively vandalised with paint and chemicals strewn over carpeted rooms.
