Art and conflict resolution DVD

A DVD illustrating the art and conflict resolution in South Africa and Northern Ireland is being shown in two local areas next week.

With commentary by Justice Albie Sachs plus discussion with artist Brian Connolly, the viewings will take place on Tuesday 16 February, 8pm, in Cottage Wood, High Street, Cushendall and on Wednesday 17 February, 8pm, in the Mill Rest Hostel, Main Street, Bushmills.

This DVD documents the making of the new constitutional court in South Africa, which opened in 2004. Artwork is integral to the architecture and fabric of the new building which also displays about 200 works of art - including tapestries, engravings, sculptures and paintings. Most of the art works were donations from artists, gallery owners and patrons of the arts.

It is also an inspirational example of how, with the will to work together and embrace diversity, people can include art in conflict resolution.

The DVD showing will be followed by a discussion with multi-media artist Brian Connolly who has exhibited and performed work across Ireland and internationally. His work often relates to place or context and he has won a range of Public Art Commissions throughout Ireland. He is currently an Associate Lecturer in Sculpture at the University of Ulster at Belfast.

This event is open to everyone and may be of particular interest to community groups, art groups, peace groups, schools and members of the public. Advance booking is recommended.
