Asbestos dumped at scenic area in Portrush

A SUBSTANTIAL quantity of asbestos was removed from a picnic area in Portrush last week.

The asbestos roofing was dumped at the Rinnagree Point picnic area, between Portrush and Portstewart, an area popular with tourists and locals.

A member of the public alerted Coleraine Borough Council to the illegal dumping and the Technical Services Department of Council made arrangements to have the material removed.

Last week a Coleraine Borough Council spokesperson confirmed that a specialist company had been employed at a cost of over 500 to remove the material.

"A quantity of asbestos was found on the Portstewart Road last week in the vicinity of the 'Pitts' area," said the spokesperson.

"This was reported to Council's Technical Services Department and arrangements were immediately made to have it removed as those responsible for the dumping could not be located.

"Council engaged a specialist firm to remove and dispose of the material costing over 500."
