Asbestos left at Rosmoyle

'UNSCRUPULOUS' builders have been blamed for leaving potentially hazardous materials in a Craigavon residential area

Large black packages thought to contain asbestos have been left at the site of a demolished house in the Rosmoyle estate.

Residents have said they fear for their own safety and of children who could play with the dangerous substance.

Locals said an elderly woman had already injured herself in the site as she used it as a short cut.

"It's an eyesore as it is," said a member of the residents' committee.

"At first the house on the site was left abandoned and then after a fire it was demolished by the owner, but the rubble has never been removed and it is used by some for dumping.

"We have no idea what could be hidden underneath and the asbestos that has been dumped is a real concern.

"Children and pensioners in the area and use it as a short cut and the whole area need clered away for all our safety."

Local MLA Dolores Kelly said she alerted the council who were to remove the material.

She said: "Those who have left this very dangerous material knew exactly what they were doing.

"The way the material has been wrapped up shows they knew how serious it is - this is just unscrupulous."

The Assembly member said the residents were just looking to an end to this long running saga.

"The developer or owner of this site has not carried out their responsibilities.

"When the house was burnt down the house was demolished but the site has never been cleared.

"This asbestos is a real concern, but we have no way of knowing what lies beneath all this rubble - there could be more problems."
