Asian businessman's community honour

Mr Sharma, who lives in Newtownabbey, was presented with the business award at a House of Lords reception hosted by Professor Lord Patel of Bradford.

The presentation honoured Mr. Sharma’s longstanding commitment to supporting the integration of the Asian community in the cultural and economic life in Northern Ireland and follows his recognition by Her Majesty The Queen earlier this year when he was awarded an MBE for services to the Northern Ireland travel industry.

Receiving the award, Mr Sharma said; “I felt most privileged to have been recognised by this marvellous organisation in the august setting of The House of Lords.

“The occasion was a humbling one, for I know that much of my success in life is due to the encouragement and support of those around me … and, in particular, to the inspiration which came from my father who was, himself, a much respected figure in business in Northern Ireland.

“I am proud that, in turn, I have the opportunities to support others and encourage them to fulfil their potential and contribute to the growth of an inclusive, vibrant society. As Gandhi said, ‘Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.’”

The British Community Honours Awards is an influential charity focusing on the advancement of inclusion and minority integration into mainstream society. Mr Sharma is the first Northern Ireland person to be recognised by the organisation.
