Ask the expert

Q: What's the best way to apply filler to walls?

A: Using standard multipurpose filler, carefully apply it with a filling knife, smoothing if off level with the wall as best you can. You may find that applying a little water helps. Leave the filler to set, then sand, wipe clean and decide whether more filler is required, if, for example, the repair has holes, lines or dips in it or it's especially deep. Repeat the process until the repair is flat and seamless.

Seasonal task

Easter is, of course, the traditional start to the DIY season and a great opportunity to get a meaty home-improvement project done. If you haven't managed or can't manage it this time, remember that there are two bank holidays coming up in May.
