Assault : Mayor’s husband in court

The husband of the Mayor of Londonderry has appeared in court accused of assaulting two people.

In the dock was Declan Aaron McCallion (34), the husband of Sinn Fein Councillor Elisha McCallion, appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court this morning, Wednesday.

McCallion, of Elaghmore Park, faces two charges of common assault and further public order charges of disorderly behaviour and resisting police.

The court heard that the charges related to an alleged incident on Academy Road on May 19.

During a brief preliminary hearing, the 34-year-old accused spoke only to confirm his details and to say that he understood the charges against him.

An investigating PSNI officer told the court he believed he could connect McCallion to the charges.

Defence solicitor Kevin Casey said the matter was “unlikely to trouble the court” and asked for a short adjournment.

McCallion was released on continuing bail to appear in court again on June 17.

As part of his bail conditions, the accused is banned from having any contact with the complainants and from being intoxicated in a public place.

A prosecutor told the court the Public Prosecution Service were not in a position to take a plea of guilty in relation to the charges.

He said that “there may have been further offences committed at the same time” involving other complainants.

The prosecution said McCallion may face further charges as a result of this.
