Assaulted man and struggled with police

Stewart Colin Alexander Agnew, no fixed abode, appeared last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court by way of videolink from Maghaberry prison.

He admitted charges of assault and disorderly behaviour at Craigavon Area Hospital on April 11 this year.

Agnew was sentenced to concurrent terms of four months in prison on each charge and ordered to pay a £25 offender’s levy.

The court heard that in the early hours of the morning police received a report of a disturbance at the hospital.

When Agnew saw police he became verbally abusive and after struggling he ended up on the floor.

He told police: “If you hit me I will get a big massive claim.”

The injured party had been hurt on his upper body and face.

A barrister representing Agnew said he hasn’t had his troubles to seek.

He waived the right to a pre-sentence report.

He explained the defendant had gone to the hospital after he had badly injured an ankle as a result of his alcohol intoxication.

The lawyer said Agnew accepted his behaviour was deplorable.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said immediate custody was the only option in this case.
