Assaulted police at the home of his former partner

Jonathon Evan Weir, Primrose Gardens, Banbridge, admitted four offences when he appeared last Thursday at the local magistrates’ court.

For disorderly behaviour he was fined £100 and another £100 fine was imposed for resisting police.

He was also fined £150 on each on two charges of assaulting a constable.

The court heard that on August 7 last year at 1.20am police went to an address in Brookfield Meadows, Banbridge, after a report of a suspicious man outside the house. Weir was located at the rear of the premises and said to police: “Why the f—k are you bothering me. I haven’t done anything.”

He continued to be aggressive and use abusive language before lunging at a constable and kicking him on the right knee. He also struck another officer on the knee.

A solicitor representing the defendant said Weir’s ex-partner lived at the address and he had a number of friends who lived in the same estate.

He explained that when she saw him she called the police.

The solicitor added that the defendant, who had alcohol taken, became frustrated and annoyed because he had done nothing wrong. There was no history of violence on his record.

District Judge, Mr Peter King, said there was too much alcohol involved which led to a bad attitude towards police.
