Mr Dickson, the sitting Alliance Party MLA for East Antrim, was made aware of the issue after members of the public contacted his office this morning.

“We’re still trying to assess what has happened and how many have been taken down,” Mr Dickson said.

“Instead of being out speaking to people on the doorsteps, we’re having to waste time looking into this.”

The local representative indicated he had received reports that the individuals who removed the posters had replaced them with those of another party.

Some of the posters removed were in the Sunnylands area, he added.

“It has happened in many elections before; it’s frustrating but these people don’t seem to realise that every time a poster of mine is torn down, my vote goes up,” Mr Dickson said.

It is the second such incident in Carrick this week after SDLP candidate Margaret Anne McKillop condemned those responsible for tearing down her election posters.
