At the heart of Europe

In his role as a member of the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People’s Youth Panel, Barry took part in an international two-day conference with people from every corner of Europe.

The issues raised by participants will be brought to the annual conference of Europe’s children’s commissioners and ombudspeople in Poland later this year.

They include concerns over health, education, violence against children and the internet.

“It was a privilege to take part in this conference,” said Barry.

“I have been able to make sure that the voice of children and young people will be heard.

“This seminar means that the people who represent us to governments across Europe will hear what we say, and act on those views.”

The European Network of Youth Advisors group has enabled 200 young people and over 20 moderators to exchange ideas and experiences and contribute their views, experiences and voices on policy making at European, national and regional levels.

“Members of my youth panel and I were involved in the initial discussions that led to the creation of ENYA,” said Children’s Commissioner, Patricia Lewsley.

“I have seen it grow and develop, but more importantly have seen the views of young people taken on board by commissioners for children across Europe.”

Barry was joined at the conference by other NICCY Youth Panel members and delegates from Catalonia, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Finland, Lithuania and Malta.
