Attacks on PSNI cars

THERE were 4,456 reported attacks on PSNI vehicles over the past five years across Northern Ireland costing the taxpayer £1,886,729.

SDLP MLA Tommy Burns asked the Justice Minister David Ford for details of the attacks.

The number of reported attacks has steadily decreased since 2005, the Minister revealed.

The level of attacks dipped from 1,477 in 2005/6; to 1,077 in 2006/7; to 819 in 2007/8; to 576 in 2008/8; to 507 in 2009/10.

The subsequent cost of repairs dipped from £705,341 in 2005/6 to £263,963 in 2009/10.

He said information by policing district was not available due to the type of data recorded.

He stated: “I regret information on convictions is not available. Court conviction data do not contain background information in relation to offences committed and, it is therefore not possible to separate out the number of convictions for criminal damage of a police vehicle from other criminal damage offences.”

The data refer to malicious damage to police vehicles.
